Hemp flower for smoking: joints, pipes, hemp cigarettes and what to know first

The short of it. Hemp flower is smoked the way any cannabis bud is: ground and rolled, or packed into a pipe, or heated in a dry-herb vaporizer. The high-THCA hemp flower sold here turns into THC as it burns, so it gets you high and shows up on THC drug tests. Smoke of any plant is hard on the lungs.

☞ What happens when you light it

Most of the THC in fresh flower is stored as THCA, which does not itself produce a high. Heat converts it. The reaction speeds up sharply as the temperature rises (Wang and colleagues, 2016), and the tip of a lit joint is far hotter than any oven. By the time the smoke reaches you, much of the THCA has become THC (Moreno-Sanz, 2016).

Inhaled THC acts within seconds to minutes, peaks in 15 to 30 minutes and tapers off over two to three hours, according to a standard review of cannabinoid pharmacokinetics (Grotenhermen, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, 2003). Start with a small amount and wait.

Whole bud keeps better than pre-ground flower. Grind what you need, when you need it.

☞ Hemp flower cigarettes

Hemp cigarettes are pre-rolled, filtered sticks of ground hemp flower, sold in packs that look like tobacco. Most are made from CBD-type hemp. Some sellers make high-THCA versions.

This shop does not sell them. Our flower comes as whole bud, by the half pound and the pound. If you want something cigarette-shaped, roll your own with a filter tip.

If you are buying hemp cigarettes elsewhere, ask the same questions you would for flower: which kind of hemp, what the lab report says for that lot, and what the total THC is.

☞ Smoke and your lungs

We will not tell you smoking is harmless. Burning plant material makes smoke with tar and carbon monoxide whatever the plant is. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reviewed the research in 2017 and found substantial evidence that long-term cannabis smoking is associated with worse respiratory symptoms and more frequent episodes of chronic bronchitis (The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids, 2017).

A vaporizer avoids combustion. Not smoking at all avoids the smoke.

☞ Before you light up

• Never drive after smoking high-THCA hemp flower. The same National Academies review found substantial evidence linking cannabis use to a higher risk of motor vehicle crashes, whatever the product was called when you bought it.
• Drug tests. It will very likely show up.
• Where you smoke. Smoking laws that cover cannabis or tobacco can cover hemp too. In many places a lit joint of hemp smells like, and is treated like, a joint of marijuana.

☞ The law

Several states ban smokable hemp flower outright, and some ban high-THCA flower in any form. We block no address, so check your own state’s law before you order. From Dec. 11, 2026, federal law counts THCA toward the 0.3 percent hemp limit (Public Law 119-37, Sec. 781; date set by H.R. 6500, Sec. 2019), and high-THCA flower stops being hemp. This shop then sells only flower that meets the new rule.
