Hemp flower in bulk: half pounds, pounds and how to judge a bulk price

The short of it. For a personal buyer, bulk means a half pound or a pound. Judge every bulk price in dollars per gram, against the same grade and a lab report for the same lot. Store it airtight, dark and cool. And mind the calendar: high-THCA flower stops counting as hemp under federal law on Dec. 11, 2026.

☞ Judging a bulk price

A bulk price is only cheap next to something comparable. Work it out the same way every time:

1. Price per gram. Price ÷ 226.8 for a half pound, ÷ 453.6 for a pound. A $450 pound is $0.99 a gram; a $275 half pound is $1.21.
2. Same grade. Greenhouse, light-dep and indoor are grown differently and priced differently. Compare greenhouse with greenhouse.
3. Bud size. “Smalls” are small buds from the same plants, usually sold for less. Fine for many buyers; just know what you are paying for.
4. Test date and lot code. A cheap pound with an old or unmatched report is not cheap.

☞ What the lab report should show for a bulk lot

• THCA and delta-9 THC, so you can work out total THC: delta-9 plus 0.877 times THCA (7 CFR 990.1).
• The lot code, matching the packet.
• A test date before the lot was packed.
• Contaminants where tested: moisture, mould, pesticides and heavy metals. If a report leaves them out, ask.

☞ Keeping a pound in good order

THCA is not fixed for ever. In storage it slowly turns into THC, which in turn breaks down to cannabinol (CBN) (Moreno-Sanz, 2016). Heat speeds the change, and the rate climbs steeply with temperature (Wang and colleagues, 2016). So:

• Keep it in an airtight container, out of light.
• Keep it cool, but not in a fridge that you open all day: condensation brings mould.
• Take out a week’s worth at a time instead of opening the big bag daily.
• Keep it locked away from children and pets.

☞ Bulk and the 2026 calendar

From Dec. 11, 2026, federal law measures hemp by total THC, THCA included, at 0.3 percent (Public Law 119-37, Sec. 781; date set by H.R. 6500, Sec. 2019). The law contains no grandfather clause for flower bought earlier. A pound bought in November is, under federal law, marijuana in December. How that plays out depends on your state’s law, and several states already ban smokable hemp flower or high-THCA flower outright.

Buy only what you would be comfortable holding after Dec. 11 where you live. After that date this shop sells only hemp flower that meets the new definition.
